While being “gay” is not God’s best for you, He does love you no matter what. You are His child, He created you for good things and for a good purpose. (Romans 8:28) See, God did not create you to be gay, He created you to live a full and abundant life in obedience to Him and to His plans for you. You may feel gay, you may feel attracted to the same sex, but this is because of some hurts in your heart that were placed there either by well-meaning parents, caregivers, or by abuse that might have been in your life. The important thing to remember is that God does love you just the way you are, He just does not want you to stay that way. He wants us to be more like Jesus every day. When I used to struggle with homosexual thoughts and attractions, I believed that God could not love me. However, I now understand that He always loved me, He just wanted me to know His love more so that it could heal the wounds in my heart that made me long for male touch. So, no matter what, please don’t doubt God’s love for you, no matter where you are, who you are with, or what you have done… He loves you still.
What about the church?
Well, you may have been hurt by people in the church who told you that God hates “fags” or that God does not love gay people. Make no mistake about it, God loves each of us dearly, without hesitation. He does see homosexuality and “being gay” as a sin that will lead to more hurt in your life. He wants better for you. But sometimes the church makes people who are still “sinning” or who have not completely found God’s perfect healing love, as if they are imperfect or unlovable… this is not God’s will. He wants His church to love others just as He does, unconditionally. Jesus even said in Matthew 9:14, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” To me, this says Jesus came just for me, a sinner who felt attracted to men and who wanted something more, but did not know how to get it because of the sickness and hurt in my heart… now He has healed me and offers me a greater love a love that cannot be taken, changed, or lessened even when I mess up. That is the kind of love Jesus offers all of us, sick or not, sinner or not, gay or straight!
